1988

Metallica vydáva Cliff 'em All, dlňhý videoklip zostavený zo záberov na koncertoch, venovaný Cliffovi. Potom podniknú turné po USA ako súčasť "Monsters of Rock" v spoločnosti Van Halen, Scorpions a Kingdom Come. Štvrtý album ...And Justice for All se objavuje v septembri. Metallica sa vydáva na svetové turné. Prvýkrát Metallica vydává dva single - Harvester of Sorrow a One - rovnako aj dva odlišné klipy One.

1987

Metallica se vracia do Evropy, aby odohrala koncerty, ktoré odložili po Cliffovej smrti. Po návrate do San Francisca kapela premění Larsovu garáž na skúšonňu, nahrá niekoľko oblúbených cover-verzií a vydá ich na CD za 9,98 USD: Garage Days Revisited. V lete hrá Metallica na Donningtonskom festivale, rozohrává sa v Londýnskom klube 100. John Paul Jones, basgitarista Led Zeppelin po tomto vystúpení kýve hlavou a hovorí si: "netušil som, že je to možné".

1986

Dobrá správa: Tretí album Master of Puppets znovu definuje "thrash metal" svojím intenzívnim melodickým zvukom. Aj bez videoklipov - pre Metalliku je to strata času. Len v USA sa predá milión kópií Master of Puppets. Na turné po Amerike tentokrát hrajú s Ozzym.
Zlá správa: Na začiatku turné po Európe s Anthraxom dostane autobus s kapelou šmyk na zľadovatelej dialnici vo Švédsku. Cliff Burton je na mieste mŕtvy. Pre kapelu je to obrovská rana. Napriek tomu nikto nepochybuje že Metallica bude pokračovať. "Cliff by bol prvý, kto by sa nasral, keby sme nehrali ďalej," povedal Lars. O niekoľko týždňov neskôr prichádza do kapely nový basgitarista Jason Newsted.

1984

Vo februári sa kapela predstavuje v Európe ako hosť skupiny Venom. Vychádza veľmi očakávaný druhý album - Ride the Lightning. Tento album plný hnevu prekvapivo začíná akustickou gitarou (následne tento nápad ukradne ďalších 3000 kapiel).Napriek nezáujmu rádií dosiahne Ride the Lightning prvé miesto a zostane 50 týždňov v rebríčku Billborad's Top 200.
1985
V auguste štartuje Metallica na Donningtonskom festivale pred ZZ Top a Bon Jovim. Koncom roka sa púšťa do práce na novom albume.

1983

Po dvoch rokoch sa Metallica sťahuje z LA do San Francisca, kde se spojí s novým členom kapely, výstredným basgitarovým géniom Cliffom Burtonom. Kapela tak vyrazí príliš bujného Mustaina a presťahuje sa do New Yorku s novým gitaristom Kirkom Hammettom a vzápätí nahrá svoj debutový album príznačne nazvaný Kill 'em All. Tento album, poznamenaný rýchlostou, energiou a pokrútenou nevinnosťou, posiela k čertu celý unavený metal. Metallica sa vydává na svoje prvé vätšie turné po USA v společnosti skupiny Raven.

1982
Lars Ulrich, Dán žijúci v Los Angeles s úmyslom stať sa profesionálnym tenistom, stretáva sa s Jamesom Hetfieldem. Táto dvojica vytvára kapelu a nazýva ju Metallica. Na Larsov nápad nahrali demo Hit the Lights, ktoré malo byť vydané na výbere Metal Massacre. James hral na gitaru, na basu a spieval, Lars bubnoval a sólo hral Lloyd Grant.
V januárii doplnili zostavu o basgitaristu Rona McGovneyho a gitaristu Dave Mustaina. V máji vystupovali vďaka úspechu na výberovke v losangeleskom klube Whiskey ako predskokani Saxonu.
